Hey, Cysters today I am gonna be talking about a problem that a lot of women with PCOS struggle with that’s facial hair. A few years back women hardly faced the problem of excess body hair. Our moms and grandmoms hardly ever had to go for threading or waxing sessions as we have to go now. Women are increasingly becoming hairier, let’s face it. No woman ever likes being hairy that too on the wrong places so let’s understand what causes this abnormal hair growth and what we can do about it. Today we gonna talk about why it is happening and what we can do about it.

What is Hirsutism?

Have you heard of the word “Hyperandrogenism”? It is pretty common with PCOS and the symptoms are facial hair, cystic acne and hair loss.  Hyperandrogenism means your body is producing elevated levels of androgen. The excess of body hair in women in a male-like hair distribution is the presence of dark hair on the face, upper chest, upper back, upper arms and upper legs. Now, these are the Androgen dependent areas. So, the presence of excess hair in these parts of the body call Hirsutism. This is present in almost about 5-10% of women.

What are the causes of Hirsutism?

Either it is because of increased levels of male hormones which is androgen in the body or simply because of increased sensitivity of the hair follicle to even normal levels of male hormones in the body. In our body, male hormones are secreted either by the ovary or the adrenal glands.

In Today’s time, the most common cause of Hirsutism is PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) whereby the overs produce excess androgens. There are certain drugs also which can cause hirsutism, even menopause can cause hirsutism.

What can be done to treat Hirsutism?

Even though there are thousands of treatments available out there for facial hair but is hard to keep the hair growing back if you are not changing your lifestyle and not treating the root cause of hyperandrogenism and PCOS and that’s why this can be very frustrating there is no quick fix.

Here are some tips I have that help you naturally treat Hirsutism

  • Swap your Coffee for Decaf green tea or spearmint tea
  • There are superfoods that can also help like flaxseeds
  • Incorporate pumpkin seeds into your diet
  • Try going gluten and dairy free, try for 30 days it help you understand. See how you feel after 30 days.
  • Exercise Well (particularly strength training)
  • Lose weight
  • Balance Diet, Diet is deeply connected to insulin resistance so be careful with your diet.
  • Plant-Based Proteins

All these things help to improve insulin resistance thereby decreasing the androgens levels in the body.
